In what can be a major blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, senior leader Yashwant Sinha has quit BJP. He said he is taking sanyas from the party politics. Yashwant Sinha held coveted portfolios such as Union Finance Minister, Union Foreign Minister in Vajpayee government between 1998 and 2004. He said he quit BJP blaming the “present conditions in party”.
“Today I am ending all ties with the BJP… I am taking sanyas (retirement) from any kind of party politics”, Yashwant Sinha announced. This is after his recent open letter to BJP MPs ‘Dear Friend, Speak Up’.
Sinha had joined BJP in the 1990s after a brief stint with the then Janata Dal. Sinha has been quite critical of BJP and the policies of the Union Government. Yashwant’s son Jayant Sinha is currently serving as the Minister of State for Civil Aviation in Narendra Modi’s cabinet. Jayant is yet to respond on his father quitting BJP.
