US-Iran Tensions Spike Again in Strait of Hormuz

Tensions between the United States and Iran have flared up once again around the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over the stability of the recently announced truce.

Despite Donald Trump extending a ceasefire and introducing “Project Freedom” to facilitate the movement of stranded ships, the situation escalated with renewed military actions on Monday. The initiative was meant to ease maritime traffic, but early signs suggest it has not had the intended effect.

Several merchant vessels reported explosions and onboard fires in the region. The US claimed it destroyed six Iranian military boats, while reports also indicated missile and drone strikes targeting infrastructure in the UAE, including an oil port. These developments have intensified fears that the fragile truce could collapse.

Although Trump declared the conflict “terminated” in his address to Congress, some lawmakers have questioned that claim. Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps asserted that all shipping through the strait must have its approval, signaling a strong stance on controlling the region.

The situation has also had economic repercussions. Shipping insurance costs have surged, and major global shipping companies are hesitant to resume operations until there is clear confirmation of de-escalation. Iran has labeled the US naval blockade as an act of war, further complicating diplomatic efforts.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that the latest incidents prove there is no military solution to the conflict. He referenced ongoing peace talks reportedly mediated by Pakistan and warned regional players like the UAE against being drawn deeper into the crisis. He also criticized “Project Freedom,” calling it “Project Deadlock.”

Adding to tensions, Iranian authorities released a map claiming expanded control over surrounding waters, extending beyond the strait and toward parts of the UAE coastline. Incidents at sea continue to raise alarm, including reports of explosions on commercial vessels and drone strikes on oil tankers.

Following attacks near Fujairah, the United Arab Emirates condemned Iran’s actions as a serious escalation and reserved the right to respond. Safety concerns have even led to precautionary measures such as shifting schools to remote learning in affected areas.

Iranian military officials have now warned that all commercial shipping must coordinate with their forces, adding that any foreign military presence—particularly that of the US—would be treated as a direct threat.

With tensions rising and trust eroding on both sides, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, leaving the future of the US-Iran truce increasingly uncertain.
