Kantara Chapter 1: Telugu Rights Hype or Reality?
One of the most-anticipated pan-India releases this year, Kantara Chapter: 1, serves as a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara. Following the nationwide success of the first installment, the makers have gone all out for this sequel, investing heavily in a massive scale, top-notch production values, and a star-studded cast. The film is slated for a worldwide release on October 2.
In recent days, reports have emerged claiming that the Telugu distribution rights of Kantara Chapter: 1 are being priced at around ₹100 crores. This has sparked debate among audiences on social media, with some considering it a risky proposition, while others suggest it could be a PR tactic to generate buzz ahead of the release.
Although the first part was a major blockbuster, shelling out ₹100 crores for a dubbed version—without a prominent Telugu star—would indeed be a significant gamble for any Telugu banner. For comparison, the recent pan-India film Coolie, starring Superstar Rajinikanth, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and featuring Telugu star Nagarjuna, reportedly sold its Telugu rights for around ₹50 crores. Considering Coolie had bigger star power and wider hype, the reported ₹100 crore price for Kantara, which features relatively smaller stars, seems exaggerated.
As a result, many speculate that these figures may not be entirely accurate and could be part of a strategic marketing move to create anticipation and conversation around the film before its release.
