Bihar Polls: NDA Sweeps, BJP–JDU CM Race Intensifies

Share

As projected by several media agencies and exit poll surveys, the NDA alliance is sweeping the Bihar elections as counting began earlier today. The saffron wave has clearly gripped the state, and the early trends are overwhelmingly in the NDA’s favour.

At the time of writing this article, the NDA is leading in 169 out of the 243 Assembly constituencies, signalling a decisive and resounding victory. However, the interesting battle lies within the alliance itself. The BJP and JDU are locked in a neck-and-neck contest for supremacy in the seat tally.

While the BJP is leading in 75 seats, the JDU is trailing closely behind with 74 seats, making it a virtual race between the two partners. In alliances like the NDA, the party with the highest number of seats typically gets the leverage to place its candidate as the Chief Minister. By that equation, if the BJP ends up as the larger party, it could push for its leader to take up the CM post. But standing firmly on the other side is the seasoned and influential Nitish Kumar.

His significance to the NDA extends beyond Bihar, making him a key figure even at the national level. As the JDU chief, he is expected to make every possible effort to retain the Chief Minister’s chair. If Nitish Kumar succeeds in his bid, he will become the Chief Minister of Bihar for a record 10th time, marking an extraordinary political milestone.

Whether he manages to secure this historic term or whether the situation takes a dramatic turn remains to be seen.
