Bollywood Glam Scam: Mukherjee Couple’s $4M Fraud Exposed

Sidhartha “Sammy” Mukherjee and his wife Sunita, known for their flashy appearances and Bollywood-style events, have been arrested in connection with a multimillion-dollar real estate fraud scheme in the U.S. The couple allegedly duped over 100 investors out of at least $4 million (around ₹33 crore), promising returns from real estate projects that never existed, according to CBS News.

Prosecutors revealed that the Mukherjees cultivated an image of affluent socialites, hosting charity events and lavish gatherings to gain public trust. But behind this glamorous front was a well-orchestrated scam designed to lure unsuspecting investors. Victims were reportedly shown forged remodeling contracts, fake invoices, and fraudulent correspondence claiming ties to the Dallas Housing Authority (DHA). However, investigations confirmed that no such projects were authorized by the DHA.

Detective Brian Brennan, a seasoned white-collar crime investigator, labeled Sammy Mukherjee “the most prolific fraudster” he’s encountered in his 23-year career. Victims, like Terry Parvaga, warned others: “They’ll make you believe they’re successful, but they’ll take every penny you have.”

Initially viewed as civil disputes, the case gained serious attention in 2024 when a couple filed a police complaint after losing $325,000. The FBI and forensic accountants later joined the investigation, uncovering losses exceeding $4 million, with 20 confirmed victims and potentially over 100 more.

The Mukherjees’ alleged fraud extended beyond real estate. Authorities claim they created fake companies and employees to fraudulently secure federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, using fabricated payroll documents. They’re also accused of scamming elderly individuals by threatening them with arrest to extract money.

Both face first-degree felony theft charges, carrying potential prison terms of 5 to 99 years. Sammy Mukherjee was initially granted bail at $500,000 but was subsequently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He is currently being held at a detention center near Fort Worth.

The couple’s immigration status is murky, with reports suggesting they sought asylum from India. Furthermore, records indicate that Sammy Mukherjee has pending fraud warrants in Mumbai.

When previously contacted, Sammy denied all allegations, dismissing them as attacks from people “jealous of his success.” The investigation remains ongoing.
