Chapter 2 Telugu Release in Limbo Amid Lack of Distributor Interest
Despite speculation that Suresh Productions is set to release the Telugu version of the Hindi film Kesari Chapter 2, top Telugu distributor and exhibitor Suneil Narang has firmly denied any involvement. “We are not releasing the film in the Telugu states. The rumours linking us to it are completely false and baseless,” he clarified.
The film, a historical courtroom drama starring Akshay Kumar and R. Madhavan, is produced by Dharma Productions and revolves around C. Sankaran Nair’s legal battle against the British in the aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Although the Telugu version is officially slated for a May 23 release, industry insiders say there is currently no confirmed distributor for it in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
A leading Telugu distributor revealed that Kesari Chapter 2 had only a lukewarm response in the Hindi belt, making it an unattractive investment for southern buyers. “The story may be historically significant, but it has limited commercial appeal in the Telugu market,” he said. He drew a comparison with Chhavva, another Hindi film that recently found pan-India success. Its Telugu version grossed over ₹4 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but crucially, it was released on a commission basis—where profits were shared between the Hindi producers and local distributors—minimizing financial risk.
Unless a similar low-risk model is adopted, Kesari Chapter 2 may struggle to find a theatrical release in Telugu states.
