Sofia, March 18 (IANS): The Bulgarian government has declared Tuesday a national day of mourning in honor of the victims of the devastating nightclub fire in North Macedonia that claimed at least 59 lives.

In an official statement issued on Monday evening, the Bulgarian government expressed its deep condolences to the families of the deceased. As a mark of respect, all state institutions will fly the national flag at half-mast.

The tragedy, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday at the Pulse nightclub in Kocani, has left the region in mourning. The nightclub, previously a carpet warehouse, had been converted into an entertainment venue. Reports indicate that approximately 500 people had gathered for a concert by the popular North Macedonian hip-hop duo, DNK, when the fire broke out around 02:30 local time (01:30 GMT).

As part of its humanitarian response, Bulgaria has been providing medical assistance to the injured. According to a government press release, 14 individuals suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation have been admitted to Bulgarian hospitals. Of these, eight patients are receiving treatment in Sofia, while three each have been transferred to hospitals in Varna and Plovdiv. The Ministry of Health reported that the injured, aged between 15 and 49 years, are in serious condition.

The Bulgarian government has also extended support to the relatives of the victims by arranging transportation and accommodation for those traveling to Bulgaria to be with their loved ones.

In North Macedonia, authorities have detained 15 individuals in connection with the incident. Interior Minister Pance Toskovski stated that the detainees are under investigation for potential bribery and corruption linked to the nightclub’s operations and safety regulations.

The North Macedonian government has declared seven days of national mourning and is conducting an emergency session to assess the circumstances surrounding the fire. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski described the tragedy as a “difficult and very sad day” for the nation, emphasizing the profound loss of young lives.

President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova expressed her shock and grief, stating, “Your immense pain is mine too,” as she extended her solidarity to the bereaved families.

The investigation into the cause of the fire and possible regulatory lapses continues as both nations unite in mourning the victims of this tragic event.
