Veteran Telugu film producer Bunny Vas, known for his sharp insights and accurate predictions, recently issued a striking warning about the future of single-screen cinemas in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. His views hold significant weight in the industry, with respected figures like Allu Aravind valuing his opinions highly.
Bunny Vas predicts that within the next four to five years, up to 90% of single-screen theaters in these states could shut down if current trends continue. He emphasized that producers and exhibitors need to focus not just on revenue shares but on strategies to bring audiences back to theaters.
Highlighting the current “half-rupee business” model, Bunny Vas said that comparing small percentages like “yours is a penny, mine is a penny” is futile. Instead, the industry must strive to restore the box office to its former glory — a “rupee” business. He expressed concerns over the growing practice of releasing films on OTT platforms within 28 days of theatrical release, which, if unchecked, will accelerate the decline of single screens.
Bunny Vas also called on leading actors to reconsider their release strategies. He warned that making only one film every two or three years contributes to dwindling theater attendance, making it difficult for many single-screen owners to sustain operations. As a result, a majority of these theaters may close, leaving only multiplexes.
He further pointed out that producers receive only about 43% of the revenue generated by movie theaters, underlining the financial challenges the industry faces.
This bold yet realistic projection from Bunny Vas raises important questions about the future of cinema exhibition in the region and challenges industry stakeholders to rethink their approaches before it’s too late.
