Canada Prioritizes Six Key Categories for Express Entry Immigration in 2025

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has reaffirmed its focus on attracting skilled talent through the Express Entry system by highlighting six priority categories for permanent residency. The initiative aims to align immigration with Canada’s economic growth strategy and address critical labour market gaps.

In a recent post on X, IRCC emphasized the need for skilled professionals across the following categories:

French-language proficiency

Healthcare and social services occupations

Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) occupations

Trade occupations

Agriculture and agri-food occupations

Education occupations

How Category-Based Selection Works

Express Entry’s category-based rounds allow Canada to target candidates who meet specific skill requirements. Applicants must first create an online Express Entry profile under one of the core programs—the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or Canadian Experience Class. Each candidate is then ranked under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

During category-based draws, IRCC identifies top-ranking candidates who also meet the requirements of a priority category. Those selected receive an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residency and must submit a complete application within 60 days.

Why Categories Matter

The government selects categories based on labour market projections, national economic goals, and consultation with provinces, territories, and key stakeholders. Each year, IRCC reports to Parliament on the chosen categories, their rationale, and the number of invitations issued.

According to IRCC, these six active categories reflect Canada’s most urgent labour needs. They supplement general and program-specific draws, ensuring that immigration continues to support both immediate workforce demands and long-term national priorities.
