Caste Row: High Court cancels caste certificate of MP, imposes Rs 2 lakh fine

Actress-turned-politician Navneet Kaur Rana, one of the eight women Parliamentarians faced a big blow after the Bombay High Court slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh.

Navneet Kaur emerged victorious as the MP from the Amaravati constituency of Maharashtra, which is an Sc-reserved seat. While contesting the elections, she produced a caste certificate that says she belongs to the SC caste.

The issue pertaining to the MP’s caste reached the High Court, after Shiv Sena leader, Anandrao Adsul, a former MP, had knocked on the doors of the court. The court examined her caste certificate.

The High Court observed that the MP got the caste certificate from the caste scrutiny committee and called it an intentional act. She was directed to pay the fine within two weeks.

The division bench of Justice R D Dhanuka and Justice V G Bisht canceled the caste certificate of the MP, as she produced the fabricated documents to get the caste certificate.

“The caste certificate obtained by Navneet Kaur, which is validated by order dated 3rd November, 2017 is cancelled and confiscated,” the Bombay High Court said on Tuesday.
