Cauvery Water Dispute: Supreme Court Shocks TN

In its verdict on the decades-old Cauvery water dispute case between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, the Supreme Court today (Feb 16, 2018) has lowered the amount of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from 419 TMC ft (thousand million cubic feet) to 404.25 TMC ft. This is in order to increase the amount of Cauvery water to Bengaluru city.

The Supreme Court in its fresh verdict has allotted 270 TMC Ft Cauvery water to Karnatakaa i.e an increase of 14.75 TMC Ft from what the Tribunal had allotted Karnataka in Feb 2007. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra authored today’s unanimous verdict of the three-judge bench in the Cauvery Water Dispute case. The Apex Court verdict has considered the Bengaluru’s need for more drinking water apart from considering the fact that Bengaluru’s industrial needs have also risen.

However, the Supreme Court verdict also said that Karnataka should release 192 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu in 10 monthly installments every year.
