With Alok Verma being divested of his duties as CBI director following a tussle within the agency, the Supreme Court will today hear his plea where he will be seeking his reinstatement. According to sources, the Supreme Court is likely to consider Alok Verma’s response on the findings of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).
A three-judge bench consisting Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justices KM Joseph and Sanjay Kisgan will hear Verma’s please challenging the Centre’s decision to send him on leave, following corruption charges levelled against his by his colleague and CBI special director Rakesh Asthana. Alok Verma will be represented by senior advocate Fali Nariman while his junior lawyers have been replaced following his plea’s leak to the media recently. The Bench will also hear the report submitted by acting CBI director M. Nageswara Rao on the decisions he made from October 23rd to 26th.
While it started off as a tussle between two heads in the CBI, the infighting got public when the CBI responded to a query by the CVC stating that Asthana cannot represent CBI director Alok Verma. The CVC sought a response to know who would attend a CBI Selection Committee meeting on July 12th. For this, the CBI responded by requesting the postponement of the meeting to July 19th as the CBI director was out of country, in Uruguay. Additionally, the CBI mentioned that Special Director of CBI Rakesh Asthana was under scanner for corruption charges. Soon after this letter to the CVC from the CBI, Rakesh Asthana who is a close aide of PM Narendra Modi, wrote a letter to the Cabinet Secretary alleging corruption by CBI Director Alok Verma.
