Rama Rajamouli, From Amrutham to Iconic Costume Designer
Rama Rajamouli, an acclaimed Indian costume designer and film stylist, is best known for her remarkable contributions to the film industry. She made her debut in 2001 with the Telugu film Student No: 1, directed by her husband, the renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli. Over the years, Rama has gained recognition for her work in blockbuster films such as Magadheera (2009), Eega (2012), Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), and RRR (2022). Her expertise in costume design has earned her the Nandi Award for Best Costume Designer three times.
Rama’s involvement in the entertainment industry extends beyond costume designing. She initially ventured into acting in 2001, playing minor roles in the popular Telugu TV sitcom Amrutham, created and produced by her cousin Gangaraju Gunnam. Rama portrayed a newsreader in one of the show’s early episodes and later appeared as a homemaker alongside the late Gundu Hanumantha Rao. Amrutham, one of the most beloved Telugu sitcoms, ran from 2001 to 2007, and completed 20 years in November 2021. The show became iconic and is still celebrated for its repeat value.
The initial cast of Amrutham included actors Sivaji Raja (Amrutham), Gundu Hanumantha Rao (Anji), Sivashri Kanchi (Appaji), and Vasu Inturi (Sarvam), among others. Although Rama didn’t pursue a long-term acting career, her brief stint on the show marked the beginning of her journey in the entertainment world. The sitcom also saw actor Naresh and later Harshavardhan take on the role of Amrutham, while Jhansi, Anita Chowdary, and Supraja played roles as Amrutham’s wife, Sanjeevi (or Sanju).
While Rama shifted focus from acting to styling, her work as a costume designer in the film industry continues to shine, cementing her legacy as a highly respected figure in Telugu cinema.
