Illegal betting apps continue to pose a significant threat, particularly to the youth, as many individuals fall into the lure of easy money. Amid growing concerns, several celebrities and influencers have come under scrutiny for endorsing such platforms without considering their social responsibility. Recently, the government booked Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, and 25 others in connection with these promotions.
Following these allegations, Vijay Deverakonda issued a statement clarifying that his involvement was strictly limited to promoting a brand associated with skill-based games. Now, Prakash Raj and Rana Daggubati have also come forward to provide their clarifications.
Veteran actor Prakash Raj stated that he had promoted a gaming app in 2016 but chose not to renew his contract as he was not comfortable with it. He emphasized that he had distanced himself from such endorsements since then. He also revealed that in 2021, when the same brand used his old promotional snippets without his consent, he sent them a legal notice to stop. Urging youngsters to stay away from gambling, he reiterated that he had no involvement with any illegal betting apps.
Rana Daggubati’s team also released an official statement, explaining that he had signed a contract in 2017 as a brand ambassador for a skill-based gaming platform. His endorsement was strictly limited to regions where such games were legally permitted. His legal team had conducted a thorough review before signing any partnership to ensure compliance with the law. The statement also highlighted that skill-based online games have been legally recognized by the Supreme Court of India as distinct from gambling, as they require skill rather than chance.
With these clarifications, both Prakash Raj and Rana Daggubati have distanced themselves from any association with illegal betting apps. However, the broader issue of online betting remains a growing concern, with authorities continuing to crack down on such platforms and those promoting them.
