OpenAI’s ChatGPT has officially taken the top spot as the most downloaded app in the world for March 2025, surpassing social media giants Instagram and TikTok, according to a report by analytics firm AppFigures.
The dramatic surge in downloads is largely attributed to the platform’s newly introduced image generation feature, which went viral after users began creating and sharing Ghibli-style artwork. This creative boom captured the imagination of millions, propelling the app to new heights.
According to AppFigures, ChatGPT amassed an estimated 46 million global downloads in March — narrowly edging out Instagram. The breakdown shows 13 million installs on iOS and 33 million on Android. Instagram followed closely with the same overall number but had a heavier Android skew. TikTok came in third with 45 million downloads.
“The difference may be slight, but ChatGPT did outperform Instagram before rounding,” the report emphasized.
The viral image generation feature, launched in early March, triggered a 28% increase in downloads compared to February. Compared to the first quarter of 2024, ChatGPT’s downloads surged by 148% in Q1 2025, highlighting its explosive growth.
OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap revealed that over 130 million users have already used the image tool, collectively generating over 700 million images since its launch. “The viral traction shows the power of giving creative tools to the masses,” Lightcap noted.
As ChatGPT continues to blend AI with creativity, it’s clearly striking a chord with users around the globe — redefining what an app can do in 2025.
