On November 28th Last year, ShivaSena Chief Uddhav Thackeray sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra under some dramatic circumstances. But Uddhav hasn’t contested as the MLA in the assembly elections. With the support of Congress and NCP, Uddhav became the Chief Minister after cutting ties with Bharatiya Janatha Party.
Now, within six months Thackeray should be a member of the state assembly (either MLA or MLC). If that doesn’t happen, he needs to resign. Now the Maharashtra Government has passed a resolution asking Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to appoint Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray as an MLC, at a time when elections to the council have been postponed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus
Already, Uddhav Thackeray hasn’t been allowed into the cabinet and it was chaired instead by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. As per law, Thackeray needs to be the member of assembly by May28th but the legislative council elections were postponed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
So, the Government has passed the resolution requesting government appoint Uddhav as an MLC as governor has two MLC seats in his hand. If the governor gives the green signal, Uddhav Thackeray can continue as the chief Minister till June 6th. Later, he needs to get elected as the MLC to keep his post.
