Chiranjeevi Faces Age vs Mass Entertainer Dilemma at 70

During the success celebrations of Indra in 2002, Chiranjeevi was persuaded to perform his iconic “Veena step.” At the time, he humorously remarked, “While I wish to maintain decorum as per my age, others are not letting me.” Reluctantly, he gave in to the crowd’s demand and danced. He was 47 years old then. Today, at 70, he seems to face a similar dilemma.

Chiranjeevi prefers age-appropriate roles like in Godfather, but when such films underperform at the box office, filmmakers often push him toward mass entertainers like Waltair Veerayya. This traps him in a cycle of dancing, romancing, and delivering fiery dialogues purely to appease fans.

The recently released promo for “Meesala Pilla” from Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu has already become a target of online trolling, sparking debates about whether a 70-year-old Padma Bhushan should still be performing such songs. Monotony and age have dulled the charm that once defined him, a challenge similar to what senior stars NTR and ANR faced in their later years. Even comedy and dance, once Chiranjeevi’s forte, struggle to resonate in the Instagram and Gen Z era.

It may be time for Chiranjeevi to focus on meaningful, mature roles that maintain his signature entertainment value. Attention now turns to director Anil Ravipudi, who has the task of showcasing the best of Megastar for both Gen Z audiences and traditional Sankranti family viewers. Once the full song is released, its reception will provide a clearer picture of whether this approach works.
