It is common for governments to change every five years, after which new governments are established, and new people come to power. That’s when the power dynamic change and people who have been loyal to the previous governments become targets for the new government. Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, addressed this issue in the Supreme Court today, saying that police officers are the first to become soft targets when the power dynamics change.
NV Ramana made this statement with respect to the case regarding Gurjinder Pal Singh, a senior IPS officer with the rank of Additional Director General of Chhattisgarh. The government of Chattisgarh recently changed, and ever since then Singh has been a soft target, with ACB raids taking place, and Economic Offenses Wing officials raiding his house. After some documents were found in his trash bin outside his house, a treason case was registered against him.
Singh approached the High Court, without being arrested, but the HC rejected his case, after which he came to the Supreme Court. Ramana took up this case, as he noticed that this would become a political issue. Singh has been suspended for a long time now and has been given four weeks to prove himself innocent in the case.
