The plea filed by Andhra Pradesh against the fellow Telugu state Telangana regarding the water sharing from Krishna River for drinking and irrigation purposes was transferred to another bench after the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana recused from hearing the petition. The CJI had called for the listing of the petition to another bench.
The CJI opined that he took the decision for a transparent hearing in the issue involving both states regarding the water disputes.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who represented the union government before the Supreme Court in the petition told the court that the government if the bench headed by the CJI hears the petition, would not put any objections.
The CJI had earlier advised the two states to go for mediation to solve the issues. Giving the reason that he belongs to both states, NV Ramana came forward to mediate between the states. Having said that on Monday, the SC adjourned the hearing to Wednesday.
When the advocate who represented the Andhra Pradesh government told the bench that the Supreme Court should adjudicate the matter, the CJI refused to do so.
The honorable CJI said that he cannot hear the petition and got the petition listed before another bench.
In the petition filed by Andhra Pradesh, it accused Telangana of using more water than the prescribed levels. It also alleged that AP was also stopped from drawing the water shares.
