SS Rajamouli recently unveiled the title of his highly anticipated globe-trotting adventure drama as Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra. The announcement, made at a grand global event, captured widespread international attention.

However, the project soon encountered a legal hurdle. Another production house had already registered the title Varanasi with the Telugu Film Chamber well in advance. According to industry regulations, identical or closely similar titles cannot be approved, but Rajamouli’s team reportedly took advantage of procedural gaps to secure temporary registration.

Following an objection from the original title holder and an escalation to the chamber, the issue has now been amicably resolved. The production house will retain exclusive rights to the title for the Telugu version, while Rajamouli’s team will release the film in Telugu as “Rajamouli’s Varanasi.” In all other languages, the film will continue to release simply as “Varanasi.”

This isn’t the first time Mahesh Babu has faced such an issue. His film Khaleja previously underwent a similar title conflict, ultimately being released as Mahesh Khaleja. Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu now find themselves navigating a comparable situation once again.
