Coolie Trailer Disappoints; Makers Plan Second Cut Ahead of Release

The trailer for Coolie, one of the most anticipated films of the season, has surprisingly received negative feedback from audiences, prompting concerns among trade circles and fans alike. The trailer, which was expected to build hype ahead of the film’s August 14 release, seems to have fallen short of expectations.

In response, the makers are now reportedly considering releasing a second, more impactful trailer to regain momentum — a strategy that worked well for Prabhas’ Salaar. That film also faced mixed reactions to its initial trailer, but managed to turn the tide with a stronger follow-up.

From a box office standpoint, the stakes are high. Coolie has been sold for ₹30 crore in the USA market, and will need to gross around $8 million globally just to break even. For the U.S. premieres alone, it requires $2.5 million, but early tracking suggests it might land between $1.5 to $2 million, falling short of target.

The risk isn’t limited to overseas markets. In Andhra and Telangana, theatrical rights were sold for ₹50 crore, and underperformance could result in significant losses.

Compounding the uncertainty is the film’s mid-week Wednesday release, which could either give it an extended run or backfire completely — especially if the film fails to impress early audiences. Industry insiders recall similar scheduling backfires, like Hari Hara Veera Mallu, where early negativity led to empty theatres by the weekend.

Unless Coolie can generate last-minute buzz — whether through a second trailer, a viral song, or other promotional stunts — the film faces a tough road ahead, particularly in high-stakes markets like the USA and Telugu-speaking states.
