A civil court in Bengaluru on Friday issued an ex parte interim injunction restraining veteran actor Kamal Haasan from making any further statements regarding the Kannada language. The order prohibits Haasan from expressing, sharing, posting, or publishing any remarks that imply linguistic superiority or defame the Kannada language, literature, land, or culture in any form.
The court’s directive came in response to a petition filed by Mahesh, President of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, who sought judicial intervention following Haasan’s controversial remarks made during the promotional campaign of his recent film Thug Life. The petitioner argued that Haasan’s statements were offensive and hurt the sentiments of Kannada-speaking people.
The court scheduled the next hearing for August 30 and directed Kamal Haasan to appear in person for the proceedings.
The controversy stems from a promotional interview in which Haasan reportedly claimed that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. The statement sparked widespread outrage in Karnataka, leading to protests and an unofficial ban on the release of Thug Life in the state. In response, Haasan clarified that his remarks had been misinterpreted and taken out of context.
Despite a subsequent Supreme Court order allowing the film’s release in Karnataka, Thug Life suffered considerable backlash and failed to perform at the box office, both domestically and internationally. The film, directed by Mani Ratnam, features an ensemble cast including Silambarasan (Simbu), Trisha, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Nasser.
Following its theatrical run, Thug Life premiered on Netflix earlier this week.
