Court grants Conditional bail to Telangana Poet Varavara Rao

Noted Telangana activist-poet Varavara Rao, who was arrested in connection with the Bhima Koregaon Elgar Parishad case got a sigh of relief nearly after two years of his arrest.

The Bombay High Court has granted six months conditional bail to the 81-year-old poet on Monday on the grounds of his health condition.

While granting the conditional bail to Varavara Rao, the High Court is said to have directed him that he should stay within the Special NIA Court jurisdiction and he should also indulge in any sort of activities like the case he was arrested.

After the competition of the six months of his bail period, the poet was directed by the High Court to report back to Navi Mumbai’s Taloja jail. The poet can either surrender to the prison or request an extension.

According to the media reports, the High Court bench comprising Justices SS Shinde and Manish Pitale said, they have granted the bail with human considerations and the poet deserves to get relief.

The poet was asked to deposit a personal bond of Rs 50,000 along with two sureties. He was also barred to contact the co-accused in the case and people who are accused of taking part in similar activities.

Varavara Rao and a few other activists were arrested back in 2018 on the grounds of alleged links with Maoists. On the allegations of making inflammatory speeches at the ‘Elgar Parishad’ conclave.

The police claimed that the conclave resulted in violence near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial. The Pune Police has probed the case initially and NIA took over the case later.
