This week has turned out to be an unusually tense one for the film industry. While movie teams are pushing full throttle with promotions, nature seems to have other plans — a massive cyclone is closing in, leaving both major releases on shaky ground.
The much-hyped re-release of Baahubali: The Epic — a combined cut of Baahubali 1 and Baahubali 2 — hit theatres today. Opening day bookings were decent, but advance sales for the weekend have been surprisingly underwhelming. With this being a re-release, the upcoming weekend’s performance is critical — and that’s exactly when the cyclone is expected to make landfall.
Meanwhile, the other big release, Mass Jathara, is battling its own storm. The team had lined up Thursday premieres and a full-scale Friday release, but the initial response has been lukewarm. Advance bookings for Saturday are even weaker, with minimal buzz across several territories.
To make matters worse, the Montha cyclone has already battered several parts of Andhra Pradesh and is now beginning to affect Telangana. With heavy rains and strong winds predicted through the day, theatre footfalls are expected to dip even further.
With weather disrupting plans and audience sentiment low, both films face a tough weekend ahead — one fighting nature’s fury, and the other struggling to find momentum.
