Academy Announces New Rules and AI Guidelines for 2026 Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, located in Beverly Hills, Hollywood, has officially announced the date for the 98th Academy Awards ceremony. The prestigious event will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026. In addition, the Academy introduced a new category for Best Stunt Design, marking an exciting addition to the awards.

On Monday, the Academy’s Board of Governors unveiled new rules and campaign promotional regulations for the 2026 Oscars. Among the most notable changes, voters will now be required to watch every nominated film in each category before casting their votes. A dedicated streaming platform will be set up exclusively for voters to ensure that they view all films. The new regulations aim to address longstanding concerns that some voters have been skipping films before making their final decisions. Additionally, voters will need to fill out a form specifying when and where they watched each film, whether in theaters, at festivals, or during private screenings.

During their campaigns, studios competing for the Best Picture and other categories will continue to host events like parties, screenings, and Q&A sessions to attract voters and generate buzz around their films.

In a forward-thinking move, the Academy also issued guidelines welcoming films that use Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. AI and other digital tools are not seen as either beneficial or detrimental to a film’s chances of being nominated. However, the Academy emphasized that the extent to which human creativity remains central to the movie’s development will be considered when judging nominees. This comes in the wake of controversies surrounding films like The Brutalist and Emilia Perez, which sparked debates about their use of AI in filmmaking during the previous awards season.
