Deepika’s Bold Stand: Why She Walked Out of Spirit

It’s no secret anymore — Deepika Padukone is no longer part of director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit, starring Prabhas. According to reports, Deepika’s exit was prompted by multiple creative and logistical disagreements. Chief among them was her insistence on an 8-hour workday being reduced to 6 hours for new mothers, along with other conditions that reportedly didn’t sit well with the makers.

However, putting speculation to rest, Deepika recently clarified that her advocacy for reasonable working hours and better on-set conditions has been a long-standing stance — not something she started after leaving Spirit. Speaking about it, Deepika said she’s been raising her voice for years about the excessive work hours many crew members are subjected to.

“I see technicians and on-set staff arriving early in the morning and leaving late at night. That’s not okay. If they are working beyond standard hours, they should be paid accordingly,” said Deepika. She added that while actors and directors often get rewarded for extra work, those working behind the scenes rarely receive the same recognition or compensation.

Deepika emphasized that long working hours not only affect mental and physical health but also the quality of the creative output. Citing her own experience with depression, she said, “I’ve realized how important work-life balance truly is. When there’s no balance, you pay a heavy price — mentally, emotionally, and physically.”

Taking her convictions further, Deepika said that in the films she produces, she will ensure strict adherence to fair working hours on set. She also called for similar reform in the corporate world, advocating for healthier work environments across industries.

Reports about her departure from Spirit suggest there were multiple reasons — not just her request for shorter workdays. Allegedly, she demanded ₹20 crore as remuneration, a share in the profits, and wanted the producers to cover her personal team’s expenses. There were also rumors that she refused to dub in Telugu for lip-sync, and was unwilling to commit to promotional activities.

While the reasons behind her exit continue to spark debate, Deepika’s firm stand on workers’ rights and on-set well-being is being appreciated by many across the industry.
