Celebrities often face issues with unauthorized use of their images. While many brands officially sign them as ambassadors to cash in on their popularity, others misuse their photos without permission, sometimes in ways that damage their reputation. Several stars have raised concerns, even approaching the courts to protect their image rights.
In a recent development, former Miss World and renowned actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan moved the Delhi High Court through a mediator, alleging unauthorized and defamatory use of her pictures. Acting in her favor, the court passed strict orders prohibiting any further misuse of her photographs without consent.
The court noted that misusing Aishwarya’s images not only causes her financial loss but also tarnishes her dignity and reputation. It emphasized the protection of publicity and personal rights, directing that all URLs mentioned in her petition be immediately blocked or taken down. E-commerce websites, Google, and other platforms were instructed to comply within 72 hours, with the Centre’s IT and Information Department ensuring complete action within seven days. The next hearing is scheduled for January 15.
The case arose after Aishwarya’s lawyer, Sandeep Sethi, argued that her photos were being morphed using Artificial Intelligence for obscene content, while some entities misused her name and image to make money. One company even falsely projected her as its chairperson by printing her photo on its letterhead. Others were found selling T-shirts and wallpapers with her images, violating her rights.
Considering these violations, the court issued a strong directive barring the use of Aishwarya Rai’s photos without permission until further orders, reinforcing the need to safeguard celebrity identity rights in the digital era.
