Despite a thick blanket of fog covering Prayagraj on Thursday, thousands of devotees continued to flock to the ongoing Maha Kumbh, demonstrating unwavering devotion to the sacred gathering. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense fog is expected to persist in the region until January 31. The IMD issued a warning, stating that “dense to very dense fog conditions are likely to continue during the night and early morning hours in isolated areas of Uttar Pradesh.”

The temperature in Prayagraj is expected to hover between 10-13 degrees Celsius. On the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya, over 57.1 million devotees took a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam on Wednesday, according to the Uttar Pradesh Information Department.

Tragedy struck, however, when a stampede occurred at the Maha Kumbh on Wednesday morning, claiming the lives of at least 30 people and leaving 60 others injured. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Kumbh, Vaibhav Krishna, confirmed that 25 bodies had been identified, with victims from various states, including Karnataka, Assam, and Gujarat. Thirty-six injured individuals are currently being treated at a local medical college.

In response to the tragedy, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced financial aid of Rs 25 lakh for the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also called for a judicial inquiry into the incident, ordering the formation of a three-member commission headed by Justice Harsh Kumar. The commission will submit its report within a specified time frame.

The ongoing Magh Mela has now seen a total of 199.4 million devotees attend. Despite the overwhelming crowds, stampede-like situations have occurred at key bathing ghats. The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26, with important bathing dates still ahead, including February 3 (Basant Panchami–Third Shahi Snan), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).
