The theatre shutdown controversy in the Telugu film industry continues to stir discussion. Following producer Allu Aravind’s statement to the media yesterday, renowned producer Dil Raju addressed the press today to provide clarity on the issue and put ongoing speculation to rest.
Speaking about actor Pawan Kalyan’s disappointment, Dil Raju acknowledged the situation, stating, “It’s understandable that Pawan garu is upset. We will meet him soon and offer a proper apology.”
Clearing the air around theatre ownership in the Nizam region, he said, “Out of 370 single-screen theatres in the Nizam area, only about 30 are operated by SVC and companies associated with me. The rest are independently run by various exhibitors and their networks.”
Explaining the reason behind the press conference, Dil Raju emphasized the need to refocus on the actual concerns. “There are valid questions that need clear answers. The current rent and revenue-sharing model is posing difficulties for exhibitors. In April, a few distributors and exhibitors from East Godavari raised these concerns. We’ve been tracking box office collections for the past six months and understand the financial pressure. Many feel that a fixed percentage-based model might work better.”
He elaborated on the existing system, saying, “Currently, theatres pay fixed rent for the first week if collections are good, and switch to a percentage-sharing model from the second week onwards. This transition is proving difficult for smaller exhibitors. We recognize this, and discussions are ongoing to find a balanced solution. Unfortunately, there’s a lack of unity in the industry, which is why some producers are individually requesting ticket price hikes.”
Addressing rumors surrounding the delay of Hari Hara Veeramallu, Dil Raju clarified, “The film’s release date was announced earlier, but it was postponed for logistical reasons. A new date hasn’t been finalized yet. However, the idea that the film is being deliberately targeted is completely baseless.”
He also criticized irresponsible media reporting, saying, “Certain sections of the media are spreading narratives about ‘Aa Naluguru’ without any factual basis. These are personal attacks, and it’s important to separate facts from fiction. That’s the purpose of this press meet — to bring clarity.”
