ED Raids L2: Empuraan Producer Gokulam Gopalan Amid Controversy

The L2: Empuraan controversy has taken another dramatic turn with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducting raids on the offices of the film’s producer, Gokulam Gopalan, on the morning of April 4th. The raids were carried out at his chit fund offices in Kerala and Kodambakkam, Chennai. However, details of the investigation remain undisclosed.

Released worldwide on March 27, L2: Empuraan stars Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, reprising his role as Khureshi Ab’raam, also known as Stephen Nedumpally. However, the film found itself at the center of controversy due to its depiction of certain real-life events. Several BJP leaders and right-wing activists objected to specific scenes, leading to widespread backlash. In response, Mohanlal issued an apology, and the film underwent re-censoring, resulting in 24 cuts—including the removal of a Special Thanks credit to Malayalam actor and BJP’s lone MP from Kerala, Union Minister Suresh Gopi.

The ED raids come in the wake of ongoing investigations into alleged fraudulent financial transactions involving producer Gokulam Gopalan. However, some believe these raids are politically motivated, possibly as retaliation against L2: Empuraan and its makers.

Interestingly, the film was initially bankrolled by Subaskaran of Lyca Productions. However, due to Lyca’s financial difficulties, Gokulam Gopalan stepped in at the last minute to rescue the project. Notably, this is not the first time Gopalan has faced scrutiny, as the ED had previously questioned him on alleged tax evasion charges at his Kochi office in April 2023.

With multiple narratives emerging around the controversy, all eyes are now on the makers of L2: Empuraan and how they navigate these legal and political challenges.
