United Nations, Feb 15 (IANS) – The intensifying conflict in and around Sudan’s Zamzam displacement camp near El Fasher, North Darfur, has sparked deep concerns among humanitarian organizations, as the region already faces dire famine conditions.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Friday that attacks on the camp have surged over the past week, with satellite images revealing heavy weapon usage and the destruction of the main market area in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. According to OCHA, humanitarian workers are among the casualties, and civilians— including the wounded— are reportedly being prevented from leaving the conflict zone.
Zamzam camp is home to hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals, making its destruction even more alarming. The World Food Programme (WFP) is actively working with partners to provide essential food and nutrition assistance to approximately 300,000 people in and around the area. However, the recent surge in violence has put both civilians and relief operations at heightened risk.
“The UN urges all parties to the conflict to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law,” OCHA stated. “Civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted, and those seeking to leave the area must be allowed to do so safely and with dignity.”
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ chief spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, announced that Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, along with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, will make an urgent appeal for aid to support those affected by the conflict.
Fletcher is set to unveil the 2025 Sudan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, while Grandi will introduce the Regional Refugee Response Plan for Sudan on Monday. These initiatives aim to mobilize critical funding and resources to assist nearly 26 million people in need, both within Sudan and across its borders.
As the crisis deepens, the UN continues to push for immediate action to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian access, and prevent further devastation in one of Sudan’s most vulnerable regions.
