It seems the Election Commission is gearing up to conduct the most expensive by-poll yet. With an estimated expense of Rs 3 Cr, the December 21-scheduled by-poll for RK Nagar constituency in Tamil Nadu, the seat vacated by former chief minister Jayalalithaa, is being termed as the most expensive by-poll. Adding to this official splurging of money, leading parties are allegedly spending as much as Rs 6,000 per vote!
With numerous complaints of money distribution to influence voters, the EC has deployed around 2,500 security personnel besides installing hundreds of cameras. The unprecedented arrangements for this by-poll will cost the exchequer a whopping Rs 3 crore. It may be noted that the election body generally spends around Rs 60 lakhs for a by-election, so the RK Nagar by-poll is consuming almost 5 times expense!
As many as 59 candidates are reportedly competing to succeed Jayalalithaa for RK Nagar seat. Most prominent contenders among them are the candidates fielded by AIADMK, DMK parties and TTV Dhinakaran, the nephew of jailed Jayalalithaa aide VK Sasikala. Reports say that while Dinakaran and AIADMK party are offering Rs 6,000 to buy each vote, DMK is offering Rs 2,000 per vote. Voters of RK Nagar constituency are making merry as each is reportedly earning around Rs 10,000 through this by-poll, which has been taken very prestigious by all parties.
Recently, hero Vishal also filed his nomination for RK Nagar by-poll, but his nomination was rejected.
