Hema Malini, who married Dharmendra in 1980, chose love despite knowing he was already married to Prakash Kaur and had four children—Sunny, Bobby, Ajeeta, and Vijeta.

However, soon after the wedding, Hema faced one of the most challenging phases of her life: a financial crisis that lasted nearly a decade.

In Hema Malini: Beyond The Dream Girl, author Ram Kamal Mukherjee reveals that Dharmendra offered financial support, but Hema declined, determined to resolve her problems on her own.

She explained that her mother, who managed her finances, had been careless with tax payments, despite repeated warnings from her father. Hema recalled, “My father kept reminding my mother to pay taxes, but she thought it was unfair to charge so much tax when I worked so hard for that money.”

After her father’s passing, Hema realized the seriousness of her pending tax dues. To clear her debts, she had no choice but to take on as many films as possible, including B-grade projects, since major production houses were hesitant to cast her as a mother of two. She reflected, “It was the worst phase of my life and it lasted almost ten years. Dance shows helped, but most of the money came from films.”

Her daughter, Esha Deol, revealed that she discovered the reality of her mother’s struggle only years later, highlighting the resilience and determination that defined Hema’s journey.
