GHMC 2020 : Voter turnout is 46.6%, Slightly better than last time

As expected the voter turn out to the polling booths in the GHMC elections 2020 hits the lowest but slightly better than the previous years. Greater Hyderabad has reported 46.6 percent of polling in its municipal elections held on Tuesday.

When compared to the 2016 GHMC polls, the voter percentage has increased by 1.32% which can be termed as ridiculous citizenship from the urban population.

Until 5 PM, the polling percentage was 36.73 percent and people who stood in the queue were allowed to vote even after the polling time ended. The turnout was 41.22 per cent in the 2002 MCH elections, 42.95 percent in 2009 and 45.27 percent in 2016 after the emergence of the GHMC.

Elections were held for 149 divisions out of a total of 150 divisions in 30 circles in GHMC. In the Old Malakpet division, polling did not take place as the CPM symbol was allotted to a CPI candidate.

GHMC had a total electorate of 74,12,601, of which 27,22,891 exercised their right to vote by 5 p.m. So far 36.72 per cent polling has been registered. Most polling stations are empty without the voters and at some places the officials even took a nap in the afternoon.

Huge queues were nowhere to be seen. The suburb’s population looked somewhat hopeful. With 11.62 per cent turnout at 11 a.m., polling rate is expected to pick up but nothing has changed.

The wealthy Jubilee Hills area had 2,10,037 voters, but only 74,611 votes were polled (35.52%). The lowest turnout was 26.42 in Chandanagar circle. The turnout was 28.14 per cent in Serilingampally circle, 29.71 percent in Karwan and 29.86 per cent in Khairatabad circle.
