Google has officially rolled out its experimental AI Mode in India, aiming to transform the search experience with deeper, more interactive results. Available in English through Google Labs, the feature is powered by a customized version of Gemini 2.5 and is integrated directly into Google Search.
Designed to tackle complex, multi-layered queries, AI Mode breaks down user questions into subtopics, offering comprehensive answers with summaries, follow-ups, and links to relevant content. According to Google, early testers are already submitting queries two to three times longer than typical searches, using the feature for activities such as trip planning, product comparisons, and understanding detailed how-to guides.
In addition to text input, AI Mode also supports voice and visual queries, capitalizing on the widespread use of Google Lens in India. Users can speak their questions or upload images—for instance, taking a photo of a plant to receive care instructions, complete with step-by-step guidance and useful links.
The new feature leverages Google’s vast ecosystem, integrating real-time information from the Knowledge Graph, shopping databases, and more. It also allows users to ask follow-up questions to further refine or expand their searches. When AI confidence is low, the system defaults to traditional search results, maintaining Google’s commitment to reliability.
AI Mode builds upon the momentum of AI Overviews, which Google says are now helping over 1.5 billion users each month. In markets like India and the US, the addition of AI-driven tools has already led to a 10% increase in engagement with complex queries.
Indian users can now try out AI Mode via the Labs section in the Google app on both Android and iOS devices.
