Google is currently testing a new feature called ‘AI Mode’ within its Search function, designed to enhance information retrieval through a more interactive and conversational approach. According to a report by 9to5Google, this feature is powered by Gemini 2.0 and is being tested internally with Google employees in the United States. A public release is anticipated later this year.
AI Mode is particularly suited for open-ended and exploratory queries, moving beyond conventional fact-finding. Unlike traditional search results, which primarily offer a list of links, AI Mode provides AI-generated summaries alongside links for further exploration. This new interface closely resembles a chatbot, enabling users to ask follow-up questions dynamically for a more refined search experience.
The AI Mode feature is positioned alongside existing search filters such as Images, News, and Shopping. When activated, it presents AI-driven responses in a full-screen layout, replacing the standard ’10 blue links’ format. Users have the flexibility to type or speak follow-up questions, refining their search results in real time.
For instance, rather than simply listing webpages on spaghetti servings, AI Mode can calculate the number of pasta boxes required for a specific group size, considering portion sizes. It can also facilitate detailed product comparisons or provide guided insights into niche topics like aquascaping while linking to relevant sources for further reading.
Google has been integrating AI into its Search function for over a year, starting with AI Overviews, which summarize search results at the top of the page. AI Mode builds upon this by offering a more structured and interactive research experience.
This development comes amid increasing competition in AI-powered search, with companies such as OpenAI and Microsoft’s Bing advancing their conversational AI models. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has emphasized that 2025 will be a pivotal year for innovations in Search, with AI Mode potentially marking a significant shift in how users engage with information online.
Currently in the early testing phase, AI Mode has the potential to fundamentally transform the search experience for billions of users. If successful, it could redefine the way information is accessed and utilized, further cementing Google’s leadership in the AI-driven search landscape.
