Guide for Indian Students: Studying in Italy

Share

Indian students aspiring to pursue higher education in Italy must follow a structured process encompassing university admission, visa acquisition, and residence permit formalities. A clear understanding of each step ensures timely compliance with Italian regulations and a smooth transition to academic life.

Admission and Pre-Enrollment
Students should first apply directly to their chosen Italian university, adhering to specific institutional requirements, deadlines, and fees. Upon receiving admission confirmation, candidates must complete pre-enrollment via the UNIVERSITALY portal for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Visa Application
For courses exceeding 90 days, students require a long-term D-VISA, while shorter courses necessitate a C-VISA. After admission, applicants must schedule an appointment at an Italian consulate or visa application center. A mandatory video interview is conducted for all applicants. Processing for a D-VISA may take up to 90 days, with additional time if supplementary documents are requested. It is crucial to submit complete documentation as outlined in the official study visa checklist.

Post-Arrival Formalities
Upon arrival in Italy, students may request a short-term study permit valid for three months to attend entrance exams. Full-course students must apply for a residence permit within eight days via the Post Office (Portale Immigrazione), which coordinates appointments with the local Questura.

EU Mobility
Students with permits from other EU countries under approved programs may study in Italy for up to 360 days, registering their presence at the Questura within eight days. Others must apply for a residence permit and demonstrate that the Italian program complements their previous studies.

Appeals and Renewal
Decisions on visas or residence permits can be appealed before the Regional Administrative Tribunal within 60 days. Residence permits may be renewed annually for up to three consecutive years, contingent on proof of adequate financial resources, insurance, and academic progression.
