Seasoned director Gunasekhar, renowned for Okkadu and his signature larger-than-life storytelling, once envisioned presenting his historical epic Rudhramadevi in IMAX. Around 2012, he reportedly held discussions with Prasad IMAX management to mount the film as a visual spectacle that could match international standards.
“Rudhramadevi was his dream project, and he wanted to showcase the warrior queen’s story in a grand, never-before-seen format using IMAX technology,” reveals a source close to the development.
The team had initially estimated a budget of around ₹15 crore for the IMAX upgrade alone. However, with only a limited number of IMAX screens in Hyderabad, Chennai, and a few other metros at that time, the plan was eventually shelved. Gunasekhar went on to make the film in a regular format, which later earned both critical appreciation and commercial success.
Fast forward to 2025, ace filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has announced that his upcoming film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, will be shot in IMAX and released in an extended IMAX version nationwide. “India currently has around 34 IMAX theatres, and this number is expected to grow by 2027. A highly anticipated film like Varanasi is likely to further expand IMAX’s footprint across India and globally,” adds the source.
This marks a significant shift in Indian cinema, as filmmakers increasingly explore premium formats to enhance the cinematic experience and reach a wider audience.
