Two Republican Senators, John Kennedy and Rick Scott, have proposed a resolution to overturn a Biden administration rule that extended the automatic renewal period for work permits from 180 days (six months) to 540 days (about 1.5 years).
This rule impacts thousands of immigrants, including green card applicants, refugees, and spouses of H-1B and L-1 visa holders, many of whom are Indian professionals in the U.S.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) implemented this rule under the Biden administration to address delays in processing work permit renewals, preventing job losses due to bureaucratic backlogs. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the policy, stating it helps businesses fill positions amid economic growth.
However, the Senators argue that the extension weakens immigration enforcement and makes it more difficult to track individuals working illegally.
This resolution is part of a broader Republican effort to reverse Biden’s immigration policies, which they argue compromise border security and job protections for American workers.
