Some directors craft stories with a particular hero in mind, believing strongly that only they can do justice to those roles. But once the story reaches the hero, there’s no guarantee it’ll be accepted. If the hero likes it, great—if not, the director may feel disappointed and may have to approach another actor. This is quite common in the industry, and many stories often end up changing heroes. Sometimes, the original script gets shelved while the director moves forward with a new idea altogether.
No one usually talks about why a hero rejects a story, as it can create negative buzz. But recently, such a case came to light. It’s known that ‘Balagam’ director Venu Yeldandi planned a film titled Ellamma with actor Nani, backed by producer Dil Raju. However, Nani opted out, and the lead role eventually went to Youth Star Nithiin. Initially, it was rumored that Nani was not satisfied with the story, which is why he stepped away.
However, Dil Raju clarified the real reason. It wasn’t due to dissatisfaction with the script—rather, it was a scheduling conflict. Nani reportedly asked the director to wait for over a year, which wasn’t feasible for the production team. So they decided to bring Nithiin on board instead. Interestingly, the same situation seems to have occurred with another film, Robinhood, which was also initially written for Nani but later went to Nithiin due to similar reasons.
Industry insiders say this has happened with a few more projects as well. In most of these cases, it’s not that the hero rejected the film due to creative issues—it’s usually scheduling challenges. This is quite normal in the industry, not just for Tier-2 heroes like Nani or Nithiin but also for top stars. Directors and actors constantly juggle dates and priorities, and such switches are part and parcel of filmmaking.
