Harish Kumar Gupta Appointed New DGP of Andhra Pradesh

In a recent development, the Andhra Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership, has appointed Senior IPS officer Harish Kumar Gupta as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for the state. The official orders confirming this appointment were issued by Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand.

Harish Kumar Gupta, a 1992 batch IPS officer, was serving as the DGP for Vigilance and Enforcement prior to this role. Originally hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, Gupta will take over from Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, whose tenure concludes with retirement on January 31st. Gupta’s appointment comes with a relatively short tenure of seven months, although it’s possible his term will be extended due to the lack of suitable candidates to fill the post after him.

Gupta was chosen by the Election Commission of India to serve as DGP in the lead-up to the AP Assembly elections, following the transfer of KV Rajendranath over security lapses during the Chilakaluripeta incident when the model code of conduct was invoked. Despite there being other senior IPS officers, including Madireddy Pratap, DGP of Fire Services, and the suspended Intelligence Chief PSR Anjaneyulu, Gupta was selected due to his impeccable service record and clean credentials.

In light of a recent PIL filed in the AP High Court challenging the selection process, the court dismissed the petition, paving the way for the government to proceed with the appointment. The orders were swiftly passed later that evening.
