HBD YS Jagan: Mass Leader, But With Conditions

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the president of the YSR Congress Party (YCP), marks his 52nd birthday in 2024 under circumstances that differ significantly from those of recent years. For the first time since 2019, Jagan is celebrating his birthday not as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, a position he held for five years. The political landscape has shifted dramatically, with Jagan no longer in power and, in fact, not even serving as the opposition leader.

Jagan’s journey in politics has been one of dramatic highs and lows, with key turning points that have defined his career. After suffering a heavy defeat in the 2014 elections, many analysts predicted that Jagan might not have the resilience to continue his political journey. Critics painted him as an impatient leader eager to become the Chief Minister too quickly. However, the subsequent years proved these predictions wrong.

The turning point came with his historic 2017 Padayatra (mega walkathon), a campaign that redefined Jagan’s political career. The walkathon, which took him across the state, helped Jagan develop a deeper connection with the masses. Initially seen as an unpolished politician, he found his footing through this outreach, drawing inspiration from his father, the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who had earned a reputation as a leader close to the people. Jagan’s ability to interact intimately with the public—whether through physical gestures like hugs or his relatable communication style—allowed him to cultivate a strong following, ultimately helping him secure the Chief Minister’s post in 2019.

Once in power, however, Jagan’s connection with the public began to wane. The charisma that propelled him to the Chief Minister’s seat seemed to fade after his tenure began. Although initially confident of a long-lasting political reign, Jagan’s focus shifted from public engagement to a more centralized approach, relying on his administrative powers rather than fostering direct relationships with the people. The result was a disconnect that became evident in the 2024 elections, where, despite winning 151 seats in 2019, YCP’s fortunes were drastically reduced.

The 2024 elections saw a decisive victory for the NDA, which secured 164 seats, surpassing YCP’s previous tally and signaling a significant shift in Andhra Pradesh’s political dynamics. Jagan’s downfall in this election was stark, but it is important to note that YCP still garnered nearly 40% of the vote share, securing 11 seats despite the overall loss. This indicates that Jagan’s influence cannot be easily dismissed.

In the wake of this setback, Jagan is reportedly preparing for a statewide tour after the Sankranti season, aimed at reconnecting with his party leaders and rebuilding his political base. This tour may serve as an important step in re-establishing his presence and relevance within the state’s political landscape.

Jagan’s path in politics has been marked by adversity and challenges, and it seems likely that the coming years will test his political mettle once again. In many ways, he finds himself returning to the 2014–2019 phase, where his future was uncertain, and he faced considerable opposition. However, despite the setbacks, Jagan’s position as a mass leader remains intact. To reclaim his political relevance, Jagan will need to re-establish a stronger rapport with the public. His leadership approach, which has at times been criticized for centralizing power and neglecting grassroots engagement, may need to evolve in order to sustain his future political prospects.

Critics argue that if Jagan wishes to remain a formidable force in Andhra Pradesh politics, he must address several key issues. These include a perceived abuse of power, a failure to maintain mass appeal post-2019, and a tendency toward a monopolistic approach. For Jagan to regain his footing and alter his political trajectory, these traits must be reconsidered in favor of a more inclusive and communicative leadership style.

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s political career remains far from over. Despite recent challenges, his mass appeal and political savvy ensure that he will continue to be a significant player in the state’s future. How he adapts to the evolving political landscape will determine whether he can once again rise to power.
