The Hindi film Homebound, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan, has been officially selected as India’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars. The movie stars Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa in lead roles and has garnered critical acclaim for its storytelling and performances.
Despite its positive reviews, Homebound had a modest opening at the box office, earning only Rs. 30 lakhs on its first day. Industry experts attribute this to limited audience awareness and the absence of a large-scale promotional campaign.
Prior to its theatrical release, the film was showcased at prestigious international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received praise for its narrative and performances. Inspired by journalist Basharat Peer’s article “A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway,” the story explores the childhood friendship between a Muslim boy and a Dalit boy, both striving to secure a police job that promises dignity and respect—opportunities historically denied to their families.
Homebound enjoys strong backing from the film industry, with Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese serving as executive producer, alongside support from prominent figures like Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla. This collaboration has added international recognition and credibility to the project.
While the film underscores socially relevant themes and has been widely appreciated by critics, its box office performance highlights the challenge of attracting audiences without extensive marketing. Industry insiders note that films like Homebound, which prioritize meaningful storytelling over commercial elements, often face an uphill struggle initially despite their artistic merit.
