Hong Kong Recognizes Crypto Assets for Investment Visa Eligibility

Hong Kong has introduced a significant update to its investment visa program, recognizing cryptocurrency as a valid asset for proof of wealth. As part of the New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) holdings can now be used to demonstrate a minimum net worth of HK$30 million, which is a key requirement for applicants seeking residency through investment.

According to Invest Hong Kong, the government agency responsible for foreign investment, cryptocurrency assets will be accepted, provided they undergo proper verification. A qualified chartered public accountant must issue a signed report confirming the value of the digital assets. This move highlights Hong Kong’s increasing acceptance of digital currencies, positioning the region as a forward-thinking hub for crypto enthusiasts.

However, it is important to note that while crypto assets can serve as proof of wealth for the visa application, they cannot be used directly for the mandatory investment requirement once the visa is approved. The applicant must invest the HK$30 million in traditional asset classes, including equities, bonds, funds, and other government-approved instruments.

The updated scheme offers an exciting opportunity for high-net-worth individuals to gain residency in Hong Kong, a city that has positioned itself as a growing financial center for digital assets. The program has already attracted significant interest, with over 750 individuals applying for the investment visa since its inception.

Eligibility and Application Process

The investment visa is open to nationals from all countries, except residents of Mainland China, Afghanistan, Cuba, and North Korea. Applicants must have a local sponsor, who must be a bona fide Hong Kong resident aged 18 or older, and can either sponsor the applicant as an individual or as a company.

The application process requires submission of relevant documents from both the applicant and the local sponsor. Once all required documents are received, the application will typically be processed within four weeks. If approved, applicants must make the required investment and will receive an e-Visa/entry permit upon successful approval.

A Progressive Stance on Cryptocurrencies

Hong Kong has been gradually embracing cryptocurrencies, offering a growing ecosystem for digital asset trading. The region currently hosts nine licensed virtual asset trading platforms, signaling its commitment to maintaining a balanced regulatory approach. This new development under the investment visa program is a testament to Hong Kong’s ambition to become a global leader in the integration of traditional finance and digital assets.

With the introduction of this new rule, Hong Kong positions itself as a compelling destination for wealthy individuals looking to leverage their cryptocurrency holdings for residency and investment opportunities, while continuing to nurture its financial ecosystem with forward-thinking regulations.
