Hyderabad Movie Ticket Hike Sparks GST Debate

Share

A Hyderabad theater ticket priced at just ₹50 recently carried an ₹800 stamp, sparking a heated debate on benefit shows, premiere shows, ticket hikes, and GST accountability.

This incident raised a key question: Is the government truly monitoring movie revenues or simply turning a blind eye?

Benefit shows are often projected as fan-driven celebrations, but in reality, they push audiences to overspend. Similarly, permissions for extra shows and inflated ticket prices are often seen as government-endorsed perks for the film industry. While producers cite soaring star salaries, massive production budgets, and mounting expenses as reasons, the burden ultimately falls on moviegoers through ticket hikes.

Another major concern is taxation. Is GST being levied on the actual base ticket price or on the inflated one? Adding to the issue, premiere tickets are frequently sold offline at black-market rates, bypassing proper channels and escaping official scrutiny.

Critics argue that such tickets should either fall under the 40% GST slab or be placed in a new special taxation category to ensure fairness and transparency.

At the core of the debate lies one crucial question: Who is being looted—the public or the government? While cashing in on the craze for big releases may seem acceptable, the lack of transparent accountability continues to raise eyebrows and dominate online discussions.
