Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has issued a stern warning against drunk driving, calling those caught under the influence “terrorists” and vowing no mercy. His statement comes in the wake of the Kurnool bus fire tragedy, which claimed 20 lives.
“Drunk drivers are terrorists. Period. Their actions are nothing short of acts of terror on our roads,” Sajjanar wrote on X. He emphasized that the incident was not an accident but a preventable disaster caused by the reckless behavior of an intoxicated biker.
The biker, B. Shiva Shankar, was reportedly drunk when he lost control of his motorcycle shortly after refueling at 2:24 a.m. Minutes later, he collided with a bus, triggering a massive fire that killed 19 passengers and himself.
Sajjanar highlighted the devastating consequences of drunk driving, stating, “Drunk drivers destroy lives, families, and futures. Such acts will never be tolerated.” He reaffirmed Hyderabad Police’s zero-tolerance policy, warning that anyone caught driving under the influence will face the full force of the law, with no leniency or exceptions.
Investigations revealed that Shiva Shankar and his friend Erri Swamy had been drinking at a dhaba prior to the crash. While Shiva died on the spot, Erri survived with minor injuries. The collision caused the bus’s fuel tank to explode, resulting in the deadly fire.
