I will not leave you till you leave ganja, says Deputy CM

Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan recently addressed a gathering of tribals in Parvatipuram Manyam district, urging them to abandon the commercial cultivation of ganja (cannabis). Speaking at a meeting held in the agency area, Kalyan emphasized that while he deeply respects tribal traditions, the widespread practice of ganja cultivation has become a social issue, tarnishing the reputation of Andhra Pradesh as a hub for ganja exports.

Kalyan acknowledged that ganja is part of tribal rituals, often offered to village deities during festivals. However, he expressed concern over its growing prominence as a cash crop, which has led to adverse social consequences. He assured the tribals that the government would assist them in finding alternative, sustainable sources of income.

One potential solution, Kalyan suggested, is to shift from ganja cultivation to tourism. By beautifying their villages and offering accommodations to tourists, the tribals could tap into a lucrative market. Additionally, the Deputy CM recommended the cultivation of herbal plants as another viable means of livelihood.

Kalyan also appealed to the youth to steer clear of ganja peddling, noting that while it may appear to be financially rewarding in the short term, it can have devastating long-term effects on their health and futures. He cited a tragic incident in Kadapa district, where ganja consumption allegedly contributed to the killing of a teacher by students under its influence.

Having noticed the widespread cultivation of ganja during the 2017 elections, Kalyan reiterated that its large-scale production and export must cease. He stressed that the government is committed to taking corrective measures for the betterment of the state’s people.

In response to questions about his focus on the welfare of tribal communities, Kalyan affirmed that his commitment transcends political affiliation. He emphasized that the government’s responsibility is to implement development programs for all citizens, regardless of their political leanings. By spending time with marginalized communities and addressing their grievances, Kalyan reaffirmed his dedication to public service and improving the lives of the most vulnerable.
