On June 1, IAS officer Nidhi Choudhari, who is a former Joint Municipal Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), posted a controversial tweet on Mahatma Gandhi which caused outrage among Maharashtrians and political circles. Her tweet also created a huge storm among Twitterattis and the tweet said that the face of Mahatma Gandhi should be ‘removed’ from currency notes. She then thanked Godse for 30.1.1948′, the day Gandhi was assassinated. (He was killed by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948). However, the tweet has now been deleted.
Today, Nidhi has been transferred from BMC to Maharashtra Mantralaya as the Deputy Secretary of Water Sanitary department post her controversial tweet about Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse. The reaction on the tweet was pretty intense from political groups and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar requested CM Devendra Fadnavis for immediate action against Nidhi. Also, a few other leaders of the NCP issued public statements against her as well.
NCP’s MLAs from Thane region had also demanded strong action against Nidhi Choudhary. But, Nidhi defends that her tweet was ‘misinterpreted’. She also replied to netizens that “Gandhiji inspires me daily” and that ‘My Experiments with truth’ by Gandhi is her favourite book.
