Mumbai is set to solidify its position as a global hub for creative technology with the establishment of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Goregaon’s Film City. Announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the inaugural session of the World Audio-Visual & Entertainment Summit 2025 (WAVES 2025) in New Delhi, the project has received a substantial ₹400 crore grant from the central government.

Modelled after the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), IICT is envisioned as a pioneering institution dedicated to fostering innovation and excellence in the creative technology industry. The Maharashtra government has allocated prime land within Film City for the institute, emphasizing its commitment to nurturing the next generation of creative professionals.

A Global Centre for Creative Innovation

Highlighting the significance of the project, Fadnavis stated, “IICT will not just be an educational institution but a leading centre driving innovation in the creative technology industry. This initiative will elevate India to the global stage in this domain.” The institute will offer specialized programs in film production, digital content creation, visual effects (VFX), animation, audio-visual storytelling, media innovation, and Web 3.0 technology.

Fadnavis further emphasized the broader impact of the initiative, stating that IICT would serve as a global platform for India’s creative sector. “Just as Davos is crucial for the financial sector, this institute will create a global brand for the creative technology sector,” he added.

Strategic Collaboration and WAVES 2025 Summit

The announcement was made alongside the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Maharashtra government for the WAVES 2025 initiative. Maharashtra has been granted the hosting rights for the summit, which will take place from May 1 to May 4, 2025, at the Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai.

WAVES 2025 is expected to attract participation from over 100 countries, serving as a major platform for professionals from broadcasting, film, animation, gaming, digital media, music, advertising, and social media. The summit will feature three key initiatives:

WAVES Bazaar – A marketplace for investment opportunities.

WAVES Accelerator – A hub designed to support new innovations.

Creatosphere – A collaborative space for idea exchange among industry leaders and creative professionals.

Strengthening Mumbai’s Role in the Global Creative Economy

Expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting this initiative, Fadnavis reiterated Mumbai’s pivotal role in the entertainment industry. He noted that with the establishment of IICT and the WAVES 2025 summit, Mumbai would further consolidate its position as a leader in the global creative economy.

The establishment of IICT is poised to transform Mumbai into an epicenter of creative technological advancements, equipping aspiring professionals with cutting-edge skills and fostering a dynamic ecosystem for media and entertainment innovation. With strong government backing and industry collaboration, IICT is expected to become a landmark institution, setting new benchmarks in creative education and technology.
