Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja continues to take a firm stand against the unauthorized use of his iconic music in films. Over the past few years, he has been actively filing lawsuits against producers, ensuring that any infringement of his copyrights is addressed. Several filmmakers and music labels have already paid compensation for using his works without permission.
Recently, Ajith Kumar’s film Good Bad Ugly faced legal action for incorporating Ilaiyaraaja’s classic songs. The Madras High Court restrained the production house, Mythri Movie Makers, from exhibiting, screening, selling, distributing, publishing, or broadcasting the film on any platform, including OTT, along with three songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja between 1982 and 1996.
Now, Mythri Movie Makers’ latest release Dude, starring Pradeep Ranganathan, has run into similar legal trouble. Ilaiyaraaja filed a case against Sony Music, claiming that two of his old songs were used in the film without authorization. The Madras High Court has allowed Ilaiyaraaja to pursue the case, and the hearing is scheduled to continue on the 19th of next month. The court also directed Sony Music to submit income statements reflecting earnings from the commercial use of his songs.
Ilaiyaraaja’s strict legal measures emphasize his determination to protect his musical legacy and ensure that his works are not exploited commercially without proper royalty payments. Meanwhile, despite the ongoing legal battles, Dude is performing well at the box office and is approaching the 100 Crore mark.
